Leave it to the NY Times
Figures the would be the one to "out" the late NYPD Officer Cesar A. Borja. They came out with a story that reads like tabloid media. Apparently Officer Borja was NOT on the pile immediately after 9-11 disaster at the Twin Towers. He actually didn't do any duty down there until late December (when "the pile" had been declared cleared) and ultimately worked a total of 17 days over the next few months.
Cesar Borja Jr. had been at the Presidents Inaugural Address last month to represent all First Responders and to address how they weren't getting the care and follow up they deserved, his father included who had past away from lung cancer while his son was in Washington. So now Officer Borja who was hailed as a hero by the President is actually not what his son purported him to be. If you read the story he claims that he spoke to other Police Officer's at the wake of his father and stated they remember seeing him on the pile but he didn't remember the officer's names. There are many of these type of inaccuracies throughout the story. My point is this, who cares? The son now has become an activist for all 9-11 First Responders and does it matter if his spent 17 or 117 days down at Ground Zero. The son is seeking federal dollars to help these men and women, what is wrong with that. The father showed signs of the many illnesses of many folks that spent time down there and of course he did work down there however limited his time was. Why does the TIMES have to take a big giant shit on this family? Its no secret how the TIMES feels about the current administration. Now the family has to bear the brunt of that vendetta.
There are a million other things this newspaper could write about but they chose to take a grieving family and use them as an axe to grind against the White House. Amazing how much of this always plays out. Politics, one nasty business.

Firstly, it was poor reporting by the News. They never checked the facts. While there are at least some people who have health problems from the "event', his is not one of them. About one million people live south of 59th street. Should we pay for their lifetime healthcare too? Or should we have evacuated the entire city until "the air is clear"?
The officer was a liar, and his benefit is to the detriment of those who really were downtown that day.
As for those worked on "the pile": absolutely everyone was asked to wear special masks; this was enforced early on; there is no evidence to the contrary.
